Navy + Mustard Yellow Outfit Inspiration for Family Pictures | Featuring: MPix + Meagan Gibson Photography
I admit, I’m not the BEST at throwing outfits together for family pictures. Friends and family have asked for help with their own families outfits but in all honesty, if it wasn’t for Pinterest, I WOULD BE LOST.
This past year for our own pictures, I didn’t want the typical Red + Green + Plaid type of outfits. Equally, as previous years, I wanted our holiday cards to be unique and different; something for my friends and family to look forward to when they receive our cards each year.
Here is the method to my madness as I gathered up our simple yet nontraditional outfits for “holiday” family pictures. I’ll sprinkle in some never seen before images of Gentry AND give you a look at how our holiday cards turned out. HINT: I’m obsessed.

THE DRESS:
Like I mentioned above, Pinterest is my go-to location anytime a photo session is near. This past year, I just happened to stumble across this dress and thought…. hmmmmm maybe it would work?! I’ve never ordered a dress from Amazon before let alone from CHINA (in my Donald Trump voice) so I was a bit nervous. I went ahead and ordered it and paid for quicker shipping. I emailed the seller to let them know I needed this ASAP just in case it didn’t fit. Shockingly, the dress arrived TWO days later… from CHINA.
Now I obviously am not as petite as I used to be. The size I ordered is a 2x and it fit perfectly. The buttons that run down the center of the dress have a stretchy band that fits around the buttons which also give it some stretch. Additionally, it is SOOOO flowy. I felt totally girly. This is what I decided to base our outfits around. I figured might as well find something that FITS and I feel good in FIRST before getting the boys their outfits.
The boys:
So Gentry was fairly easy to pair with my outfit. I got his entire get up (minus the bowtie) at Target. During that season, this whole outfit was on one of the front end caps and my eyes IMMEDIATELY saw it when I strolled into the store. I got super lucky with Mitchell’s plaid shirt, finding it in the same shopping trip when I picked up Gentry’s outfit. The jeans he had previously and wore his normal converse with his outfit. I was nervous pairing a plaid print button up with a floral dress, but after digging on Pinterest for a while, I found that it actually looks okay!

So I’m not crazy right? Plaid and floral do go together…..right? 🙂
BOYS? CHECK. MY OUTFIT? CHECK…. ALMOST….
SHOES! So now that I had my dress, I had no idea what shoes to wear with. The model from Amazon wore shoes I wouldn’t say were my favorite. So I enlisted some help from my friends on Facebook:
After I made that post and everyone chimed in on their favorite, I strolled over to Famous Footwear to see if I can try on any shoes along side of my dress. It just so happened that the bottom wedges in my Facebook post were on clearance for $15. I COULD NOT PASS THAT UP! You can baaaarely see them peeking out on this image:
So now that our outfits were put together, our photo session came and went in the blink of an eye. My photographer BFF Meagan with Meagan Gibson Photography was our photographer this year. I loved how crisp and clear the images turned out. Plus Gentry had a BALL might I add!
I think the combination of prints and colors along with the venue worked out perfectly.
2016 Geiger family holiday cards
Our holiday card design was purchased from: Dala Design Co.
Our cards were printed with MPix.com
Design by Dala Design Co.
I am known to HUNT and HUNT and DIG and DIG until I find THE specific thing I am looking for. I consider it a flaw as it gets very time consuming and annoying but I just can’t help it. Well it took me awhile to find this card design. Everything clashed with our outfits and it honestly made me second guess going the nontraditional route. Once my eye caught these in my Etsy search, I just knew it was the one. Its almost like it was made for me with the watercolor accents!
Printing by mpix
So I have been using MPix for a majority of my prints (unless I need something ASAP and have to use my local printer!) since I started modeling in 2006. I still remember the conversation I had with the late George with ONYX Photography about how he recommends mpix for all of his printing. I followed his recommendation and have been a customer ever since! This cards were printed on their Signature Paper (no gloss) along with some of their envelopes. I think the color of the envelopes fit perfectly with the design of the card.
